While I appreciate the context of the post, I think that in a lot of cases it is a case of "snappy phrases" which lack the depth of your point.

I have been amazed in recent weeks when people have said to me "Well if the Lib Dems had just said they had to revoke their promise on Tuition Fees but were committed to keeping it capped it may have been better". They were nonplussed when I said this is exactly what Cable and Clegg said from the beginning, and it was ignored or too far down the column for most people to read up on.

Therefore, while we want to keep pushing this message, until it is a snappy phrase, eg Lib Dems Saving Britain from a Fate Worse than Greece, we are pushed to the bottom of the media importance pile.

There is also a significant issue with Conservatives not backing up this message. Do you ever hear Cameron extolling the spending of Bankers? Or do you just hear them placating the right wing with attacks on Labour Spending on the Poor?

I agree with this. It is inconsistent. We don't have a public set of criteria to judge dictators by, nor a public ranking of "ability to overthrow foreign governments through military means" (maybe the government does though!).

My thoughts on why Nazi Germany, but not Khmer Rouge Cambodia is to do with spheres of influence. Getting a resolution through the UN Security Council (i.e. past Russia and China) seems to depend on a combination of how much it interferes in a country's "internal affairs" and how close the country is to Russia or China. They don't want to foment democracies in their own backyard. Reform of the UN is the only way to tackle this. But that's a topic for another blog post! ;)

I do have a problem with inconsistency of our foreign policy. But I suppose I get over this by believing we should do what we can, when we can, and being hugely sorry we can't do more to help others. It's not a hugely satisfying answer.
